Professor Francisco Matus. Ph.D.

Professor Francisco Matus is Agronomist and he fulfilled his Master degree at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (1989). He completed his PhD at Wageningen Agricultural University in Holland. Both programs, the Master degree and the PhD were conducted in plant nutrition, soil fertility and environmental sciences. In 2006 Professor Matus moved from the agronomy school at Universidad de Talca to Universidad de La Frontera to the Department of Chemical Sciences and Natural Resources. In 2009, Professor Matus was invited as Post-Doctoral Fellow by Chemical Department of Carleton University and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to join a Governmental Canadian project to improve the nitrogen use efficiency in cropping system (2009-2011). His main research interest is in soil nutrient dynamics and soil conservation in volcanic soils. He has also been working in carbon sequestration in agriculture and humid temperate rain forest ecosystems. He has been increasingly gained experience in carbon and nitrogen cycling in extreme environment such as Antarctic soils. In 2017 he was invited by the Department of Agriculture and Soil Science from Georg-August-University of Göettingen, Germany to work in abiotic processes on organic carbon and nitrogen decomposition in soil. Professor Matus has also experience in stable isotope at the rhizosphere level studies and in crop simulation models. He has good international contacts and collaboration with research groups in Germany, Holland, France, Canada, Belgium and New Zealand. From 2013 to 2018 he was the Director of PhD Program in Natural Resources Sciences at Universidad de La Frontera. Currently he is leading several projects from his l,ab: Laboratory of Conservation and Dynamics of Volcanic Soils.
